The USA economy is not getting better

Every month as the government reviews the economy the first news is always that the economy is improving and has shown marked gains. Golden Sachs suggests that, “The United States can expect substantial acceleration in real GDP growth over the next two years to a 4% pace by early/mid-2012".
According to the bureau of Labor statistic’s report for February 2011, the unemployment rate for the whole of USA went down in January 2011 to 9% from a high of 9.8 in November 2010. This is surprising considering that only 36,000 jobs were generated, the lowest in four months.

The percentages given are government figures and knowing that they have to do damage control the figures do not always represent the truth. There are many people who have fallen out of the radar of unemployment because they stop reporting their unemployment status either because they have exhausted their unemployment benefits or have just given up after searching for employment for so long.

According to an Associated press report, “Job openings dropped sharply in professional and business services, a category that includes temporary help agencies. They also fell in construction, manufacturing, and in education and health services”. These are areas that normally require great education and are needed because they are service oriented.




Certain states are in fact reporting higher unemployment figures which again is just a tip of the iceberg of the reality in the ground. In California, where this writer is based, currently the reported unemployment is estimated to be 12.5 % up from 12.4 in the previous months.

Walmart has many woes, and Customer service is Zilch!

WalMart, the giant supermarket appears to feature in the news a lot. After all it is one of the largest chain of discount stores in the United States of America. Its former chief Executive H. Lee Scott, on an interview with the New York Times said that running the chain is “like running for president of the United States" because of the constant scrutiny.


Walmart was started by Sam Walton in 1962 and as of today has many outlets in different countries operating under different names. According to Forbes report, as of 2010, it was the “largest public corporation by revenue”.

Walmart features in the news for many reasons, both good and bad. It is discussed in social medias gaining foes and supporters alike. Some support it for making the common person afford things that would otherwise be outside their domain while critics argue that the low prices have depressed domestic wages and exported manufacturing jobs to foreign countries which in the process has hurt Americans more than help them.

Complaints have been leveled against it for undercutting its business competitors by offering very low prices to the same products as its competitors. By so doing, Walmart was in effect pushing smaller business entities out of business.

Walmart is known to have grown stronger during the recession due to its low prices on grocery and other products. “The financial turmoil that strangled discretionary spending at many stores sent struggling consumers straight into the arms of Wal-Mart”. However as the economy picked up, the sales are said to have “flattened up”.

Labor Relations
The areas that the company has however featured more is on its labor relations. Walmart has been accused many times of exploiting its factory workers particularly those from developing countries. It is suggested that the only reason it is able to offer such cheap prices for its products is because of exploiting cheap labor in countries like China.

WalMart has also been accused of being racist against people of color and it has really been working hard to wipe out this image. More and more their commercials have employees who are of color which is of course aimed at showing diversity of its employees. This accusation emanated from a time when someone used a Walmart public address system and said “Attention Wal-Mart customers: All black people leave the store now.”

Rules to live by for the betterment of your life

“You can accomplish anything you wish that is not contradictory to the laws of God or man, providing you are willing to pay the price” O G Mandino, (A better way to live).

O G Mandino is one of those writers who I consider to have been inspired by the Holy Spirit in his writings and teachings. His writings resonate with Biblical principles an indication that he found his worth and inspiration from the scriptures. In his book “A better way to live” he states that “when God gave us dominion over the world, He also gave us dominion over ourselves. We each plot our own map. God is our navigator---God bestowed on each of us intellect and talent and vision to map our own way, to write our own book of life in any manner we chose” (P.46). He reminds us that our worth is always determined by our deeds not by our good intention, however noble. Indeed James in his epistle writes “--- faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead” James 2:17.

In “A better way to live” he suggests the following principles;

1) Count your blessings- Once you realize how valuable you are and how much you have going for you, you will finally be able to move forward toward the life that God intended for you with grace, strength, courage and confidence.

2) Today and everyday deliver more than you are getting paid to do- The victory of success will be half won when you learn the secrets of putting out more than is expected in all that you do.

3) Whenever you make a mistake or get knocked down by life, don’t look back at it long- Mistakes are life’s way of teaching you. Your failures when they happen are just part of your growth. Never quit, your turn will come.

4) Always reward your long hours of labor and toil in the very best way, surrounded by your family- Nurture their love carefully remembering that your children need models not critics and your own progress will hasten when you constantly strive to present your best side to your children. Even if you have failed at all else in the eyes of the world, if you have a loving family you are a success.

5) Build this day on a foundation of pleasant thoughts - Never fret at any imperfections that you fear may impede your progress. Remind yourself as often as you can that you are a creation of God and you have the power to achieve any dream by lifting up your thoughts.

How to identify your life dream

“Jabez called on the God of Israel saying, “Oh that you would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain!” So God granted him what he requested” 1 Chronicles 4:10.

To become successful or fulfilled in life you must start with a dream. A life dream is the way you want to live, not just the things you want to own. It is the person you want to be not just the title you want to see under your name on the door. It is the mindset that you have not the degrees you earn. A life dream is in actuality the world view that you claim as your own.

The critical point to recognize is that both the unlimited potential of childhood and the tight constraints of adulthood originate and reside primarily in the imagination. If you believe you can, you probably can and if you believe that you cannot you most assuredly will not. It is therefore important to identify what your life dream is. To do so start by setting an atmosphere for yourself that is conducive to identifying your life dreams. A prayer to God may guide you on the direction you should take.

Start by revisiting your childhood dreams because in most cases childhood dreams hold the key to the person’s true cache of talents, abilities and motivation. I remember as I child I was the family counselor even though I was the youngest. As I grew older I would notice that if there was a family crisis my family would insist on consulting with me first before acting. I became a lawyer because of the need to defend the cause of those oppressed but I realized I was counseling more and felt more fulfilled when I reconciled my clients. I decided to go back to school to add counseling to my qualifications and I know that this is what I was called to do in life.

To determine your life dream ask yourself the following questions:

Simple Steps to personal success

Many people in the world are miserable looking for something that seems elusive to them. They want success which is defined by external things like material wealth, power, or a big title. Yet there are others who have all the things that some define as success but have discovered that they are still not happy even though what they wanted is now theirs. So what is the problem?

The secret of getting what you what and wanting what you have is first learning how to be happy, loving, confident and peaceful regardless of your outer conditioning. Personal success comes from within and is achieved when you are able not only to be yourself but also to love yourself. It is feeling confident, happy and powerful in the process of doing what you want to do.

If you are already happy and you know that you are not dependent on more money to be happy, greater wealth can make you happier but is not the condition for your happiness. The more you think that money is capable of making you happy the more you give away your power to be happy without it. In his book “How to get what you want and want what you have”, John Gray suggests the following four steps in achieving personal success.

Step one: Set your intention- Recognize where you are now and clearly see where you need to go to achieve the right balance of inner and outer success for you. In other words “be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God” Romans 12:2. Ask God for the direction of your life.
